Nell

Nell, is an Irish coloured cob standing 14.1hh  and we originally purchased her as a companion for Charlie our 37 year old Anglo Arab gelding.

Sadly, Charlie passed away with a stroke a couple or weeks before Nell arrived at the farm so she never got to meet him. We had always had tall thoroughbred type horses before, but quickly Nell won us over with her kind disposition and friendly nature.

Whereas Charlie would be very finicky about his hay and his feed in general, Nell, by contrast would eat everything you put in front of her.

Although unbroken when she arrived, she would placidly stand for the farrier and never seemed phased by the arrival of the vet!

When Nell was 4 we decided to put her to Diggers Gold, a Royal Welsh Champion Stallion.

It took us an hour and a half to travel along the coast to the Lleyn Peninsula with Nell in the Ifor Williams trailer. As soon as we drove into the yard, the mare and the stallion started to talk to one another and it was love at first sight.

Although she was a filly, she had an easy mating and we picked her up a week later.

She had an easy pregnancy and delivered her first foal, Rhys, by herself high up in the field early in the morning.

Rhys has grown into a strong horse, with good manners and the quiet manner of his mother.

We were enjoying the coloured cobs and finding them easy to look after. Minwah, however, was missing her dressage horse and so we put Nell to Hugo a dark bay 17.1hh Dutch Warm Blood, eventer.

We were a little concerned at first about the height difference between the Mare and the Stallion, but our fears were quickly allayed when the two of them met.

As before she had an easy mating and once again her pregnancy was trouble free. She delivered her foal Myfannra, a lovely filly,  without any fuss early in the morning out in the paddock and we were very surprised to find them both when we arrived to feed.

She is an excellent mother and we know that we are very lucky that she foals so easily.

Next time we would like to put her to a  traditional coloured Vanner.
